Horror and gothic

Despite my love of all things girly and pink, I do have a macabre obsession with the creepy and weird, fixating on the things that go bump in the night, the darkness that lurks within every human hear and anomalies we only spy out of the corner of our eye. I like to be more experimental when drawing for horror, playing with new art styles and textures.

The Woods Whisper to You

Some miscellaneous original magical girl designs.

Art from my interactive hyperlink story 'The Woods Whisper to You.' As the story follows the unstelling misadventures of a little girl exploring the woods, I wanted the illustrations to be reminiscent of line drawing and sketch-style illustrations in children's books. I wanted to create an unsettling atmosphere that hinted that the woods itself was an entity preying on the child. More information in Other.

Jane Eyre: Demon Huntress

What do you get when you combine a heroine from a staple of the gothic canon and rule of cool anime aesthetics? Scythe-wielding, demon fighting, early 2000s gothic manga Jane Austen of course. At least this is what my brain cooked up for one of my last university assignments of my English degree. While this was ultimately for an assignment, I did end up loving the piece, especially the way I was able to use the medium of illustration to translate the gothic, moody and reflective elements I loved most from the book while still playing around with exaggerated anime tropes and styling. While I don't think Charlotte Brontë would approve of this adaptation, I for one would happily read this (especially since in my version she Jane Eyre doesn't end up with nasty Edward Rochester).

The Abyssal Woods

I know - this is the SECOND horror concept I have in the woods, but hear me out. The woods have been a staple of horror since the earliest days of storytelling, where stories were not words on a page to entertain but warnings wrapped in metaphors that ensured the survival of our children in the dark, dense, unknown. The Abyssal woods is a concept for a point and click horror game that explores this idea, a dark fairytale where the woods becomes a seemingly unending void home to vicious and cruel monsters.

The two characters on the left are hypothetical protagonists for this game - an orphaned rabbit desperate to prove herself a hero and her strange-looking friend who calls herself a 'Ew-man' who stumbled into the woods through a rabbit hole. Both girls are trying to find the end of the woods to have their wishes granted but their adventure will grow only grow darker as less light makes its way through the canopy.

The figure on the right is a powerful but mysterious character they meet along the way, who seems to be tied in someway to the shifting, breathing, sinister woods.
